The Winter Solstice (or Midwinter) marks the shortest day of the year and the longest night, bringing with it the promise of increased sunlight in the days ahead. This night has been celebrated since the Stone Age with many rituals marking the symbolic death and rebirth of the sun and a time of new beginnings. It is a cherished time of year in many cultures, observed with festivals and time spent with friends and family.
The Winter Solstice teaches us to embrace the darkness and find beauty in it. It is a time to connect with nature and honor the changing of the seasons and to remind ourselves that every ending is also a new beginning. It is a reminder that the cycles of nature are mirrored in our own lives.
In honor of this mysterious and wonderous event, Lakewold offers its own celebration of light featuring inspirational presentations of art, music, literature and poetry from diverse traditions. Festival guests will celebrate in the cozy, festively decorated Wagner House, enjoy music by local musicians, participate in a lantern making activity, take special evening tours in the darkened gardens, hear winter themed readings, and experience a new exhibit by the Contemporary QuiltArt Association, with each work inspired by the theme of light.
Winter Solstice festivities are scheduled from 5 to 8 pm Thursdays – Sundays, between December 14 and 31, 2023. Tickets are $20 general admission, $16 for students, seniors and military, and $12 for youth ages 6-17 (kids 5 and under are free).
