Until time travel is a thing, literally reliving your childhood is sadly outside the realm of possibility. However, figuratively reliving it – as in reliving it through the action figures and toys of your youth – is entirely possible at the Washington State History Museum. Their exhibition - Toytopia - is pure nostalgia, filled with many of the things that made your childhood memorable, and plenty of the things you wanted, but your parents just wouldn’t buy.
The exhibition includes:
- Scaled up oddities – The world’s largest Etch-A-Sketch (eight feet!) a life-size dollhouse and a life-size Monopoly car will skew your sense of perspective.
- A chance to act out the movie Big – Did you want to slide across the giant piano keyboard
star Tom Hanks played on, or have your fortune told by Zoltar? This is your chance! - A step back in time – A retro arcade is a great way to kill some time and quarters, and historic Schylling Tin Toys and Lincoln Logs give a glimpse into toys from the past that stand the test of time.
- A competitive edge – Let’s just take a moment to acknowledge that civility is the first thing to go out the window when a Connect Four board is set up. At the board game station, you’ll find several games to bring out your competitive streak.
While kids might seem to be this exhibitions target demographic, the parents might end up having a better time than the tots at the end of the day. And as date night, you’d be hard pressed to do better.
