Film fans (and fans of alliteration) are fixing to flock feverishly to a few family-friendly film festivals in Tacoma and Pierce County this fall. Beginning this weekend and continuing through the fall, Tacoma and the South Puget Sound are home to three eyebrow-raising cinematic festivals, including:
Aug. 25-27, 2017 - Destiny City Film Festival (Blue Mouse Theatre - 2611 N. Proctor St., Tacoma)
Returning for a fourth year in 2017, the Destiny City Film Festival highlights independent films mainly from the Pacific Northwest. The 31 films on tap over the course of the three-day festival cross categories, genres and subjects. There are documentaries, feature films, shorts, international submissions and animated films, and while many deal with adult themes, there are several family-friendly options as well. A free series that includes all the family-oriented short films begins screening on Saturday, Aug. 26 at noon.
Oct. 5-12, 2017 - Tacoma Film Festival (The Grand Cinema - 606 S Fawcett Ave., Tacoma)
The Tacoma Film Festival celebrates unique and innovative storytelling with eight days of workshops, discussions, awards and screenings of more than 100 independent films from across the globe that have never screened in this region. Going a step beyond the screen, TFF is the place to meet groundbreaking and influential artists before the rest of the world catches up. Listed four years running among MovieMaker Magazine’s “50 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee,” TFF is the only festival that hosts Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film to screen and discuss their work.
Oct. 26-29, 2017 - Gig Harbor Film Festival (Galaxy Uptown Theater - 4649 Point Fosdick Dr. NW, Gig Harbor)
Rated one of the fastest-growing independent film events in the Pacific Northwest, and set in a waterside town that was listed among the five best small towns in America by Smithsonian Magazine, the Gig Harbor Film Festival packs a lot of cinematic excellence into one weekend. While the Gig Harbor Film Festival sponsors screenings and events throughout the year, the actual film festival itself is the highlight of the year of programming, with 15 feature films and 72 shorts from all over the world.
